1. Start with governance, not tools. Before your team opens a single AI platform, establish your internal AI use policy. Define which tools are approved, explicitly prohibit the entry of protected health information or sensitive financial data into non-approved platforms, and create a review workflow for AI-generated content. A clear, practical policy protects your organization and builds staff confidence.
2. Choose your first use cases carefully. Select three to five low-risk applications where AI can add immediate value without touching sensitive data. Good starting points include:
Summarizing de-identified operational reports
Drafting board briefing language from aggregate financial data
Generating root cause hypotheses from quality dashboard trends
These use cases let your team build prompting skills and establish validation habits before moving into more complex applications.
3. Invest in prompt quality. AI outputs are only as useful as the instructions you provide. Vague prompts produce generic summaries. A strong prompt:

Identifies the intended audience
Requests a specific type of output
